Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a country spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It is the largest country in the world by area, extends across eleven time zones, and shares land boundaries with fourteen countries.

It is the world’s ninth-most populous country and Europe’s most populous country. The country has a population of approximately 145 million as of January 2023.

The country’s capital and largest city is Moscow. Saint Petersburg is Russia’s cultural center and second-largest city

During the 2023 census, 42 percent of the population declared themselves to be Russian Orthodox.
